FAQS

HOW DO I GET STARTED?

Just click the ‘Get Started’ button on our website and submit an enquiry that provides a short description of your business as well as your legal needs. After you’ve submitted an enquiry, one of our lawyers will review your enquiry and get in touch as soon as possible to get a better idea of exactly what you are looking for and whether we're the right fit.

WHERE ARE YOU BASED?

Our head office is based in London, England. However, we're a virtual firm and our use of technology means we have team members working remotely from the U.S. and several other places around the world.

WHO ARE YOUR CLIENTS?

We partner only with businesses we believe in and know we can contribute to.  We primarily work with Emerging Companies, Investors and Law Firms based in the U.S. or U.K., or on transactions with a touchpoint in one of those jurisdictions (e.g., representing a CVC, VC fund or angel investor investing into a U.S. or U.K. company).

HOW IS HATCHLING DIFFERENT TO TRADITIONAL LAW FIRMS?

We believe we're different to the traditional law firms in a numbers of ways.  These differentiators include, among other things: (i) offering a full service with the attention and care of a boutique firm; (ii) a specific focus on working with Emerging Companies and Investors; (iii) partnering only with businesses we believe in and can contribute to; (iv) our use of independent contractors who have the autonomy to choose their projects; and (v) our culture.  See our Why Hatchling page for more information.

WHO ARE HATCHLING'S LAWYERS?

Our team is made up of experienced U.S. and U.K. lawyers who are specialists in various areas of law. They come from the best universities/ law schools and have trained at leading firms for at least 5+ years.  However, they have left that world behind for a number of reasons (e.g., to raise families, to have more autonomy over their lives, or to help us in our mission in creating a new type of firm).

WHAT AREAS OF LAW DOES HATCHLING SPECIALISE IN?

Our focus is on providing legal services for Emerging Companies and Investors. Our lawyers specialise in a number of relevant practice areas, including corporate and commercial law (e.g. formation, financings, exits), technology, intellectual property and employment. We do not advise on contentious matters, conveyancing, debt collection, or personal legal matters (such as wills, estates or personal injury. See our Services page for more information.

WHAT ARE HATCHLING'S FEES?

We recognise that having certainty around legal fees is crucial to all business, especially Emerging Companies. We therefore have a single standard hourly rate for all Hatchling lawyers that is substantially lower than what you would pay for a first year associate at most traditional law firm.  We will also often agree to fixed fee billing arrangements and alternative fee structures so long as we have sufficient clarity around the scope of work.  See our Fees page for more information.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO BRING A HATCHLING LAWYER TO MY COMPANY ON A PLACEMENT?

Yes.  There are times when companies (including law firms) may want or need to bring in a lawyer on a temporary basis - e.g., during a particularly busy period, to add expertise in a particular area key to a project, or to trial a new position.  On these occasions, Hatchling can sometimes arrange for a placement of one of our lawyers.  While other companies offer these types of placements, Hatchling's offering is unique given its network is comprised of lawyers dedicated to working with Emerging Companies and Investors.

CAN YOU PROVIDE MY BUSINESS WITH TEMPLATE DOCUMENTS?

Our focus is on providing a personalised bespoke service and not on providing template documents like some other services online.  Notwithstanding, where possible, we are usually willing to share our template documents with clients to help them manage their costs.  We also provide such template documents to non-clients for a small fee.

I'M A LAW FIRM, HOW CAN HATCHLING HELP ME?

Law firms often need additional support during particularly busy periods or sometimes provide added expertise in a particular area on a project.  On such occasions, Hatchling is able to help by working alongside you, as part of your team with white labelling, or in the background.

IS HATCHLING A LAW FIRM?

Hatchling intentionally structured itself as a legal consultancy and our lawyers are not acting as solicitors when providing services through Hatchling. In England and Wales, law firms are authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), and when we provide services to our clients we are not regulated or authorised by the SRA. Legal consultants advise on non-contentious commercial, intellectual property and IT matters, which are not areas of practice reserved to solicitors. By structuring Hatchling as a legal consultancy, we can keep our running and administrative costs down and pass on the benefit of savings to our clients and provide our services at a much more competitive rate than solicitors providing the same services.

ARE THERE ANY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ENGAGING A LEGAL CONSULTANT AND A SOLICITOR?

Yes, there are differences as solicitors are subject to rule and regulations of the SRA.  The most relevant point is that a solicitors’ advice can be “privileged”. This means that correspondence between a client and solicitor can, if made confidentially and for the purposes of legal advice, be withheld from a court or third party in connection with legal proceedings. Advice from non-regulated advisors is not “privileged”, which means our correspondence and advice is treated in the same manner as advice from your accountants or anyone else who is not a regulated advisor such as a solicitor or barrister. Other differences pertain to rules of ethical conduct application to solicitors (rules that we as lawyers continue to take very seriously) and mandatory levels of insurance cover. Hatchling is not subject to this latter requirement and does not maintain professional indemnity cover due to the limited scale and complexity of our product offering. Most clients very rarely require such additional protection and would rather not have to pay the additional premium to have said assurance.

HOW DOES HATCHLING OFFER A PREMIUM SERVICE WHILST USING INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS?

Hatchling is made up of a small team of permanent lawyers supplemented by a larger number of independent contractors.  We believe our model actually improves the level of our service for a number of reasons.  First, a Hatch Partner will be assigned to you company for so long as you are a client. This Partner will be your main point of contact, intimately familiar your business, and always involved in your projects.  Second, the independent contractors we work are experienced lawyers that we use on a regular basis.  They have been carefully selected after a rigorous vetting process.  Third, we're able to pass on some of the cost-savings of staffing leanly to our clients.  Finally, our model means we can offer a full service but with the special attention of a boutique firm.
